What is Custom Slitting?

Custom slitting is the process of converting master rolls of thermal transfer ribbon into finished rolls with specific widths and lengths according to your requirements. This ensures perfect compatibility with your TTO printers and eliminates waste.

What is Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO)?

Thermal Transfer Overprinting is a non-contact printing technology used to apply variable information—such as batch codes, expiration dates, barcodes, and logos—directly onto flexible packaging, films, labels, and tags during high-speed production.

How It Works: A heated printhead applies the thermal transfer ribbon to the substrate. Heat melts the ink coating, transferring it permanently to the surface. This creates durable, high-resolution marks resistant to abrasion and moisture — ideal for real-time variable data printing at production line speeds.

TTO Ribbon Types Explained

Wax-Resin Ribbons (JS-TPRG5, JS-NE20WR, JS-STX332) — Best for flexible packaging, coated papers, synthetic materials, films. Print speeds up to 32 ips. Good chemical and abrasion resistance with wide substrate compatibility. Ideal for food & beverage packaging.

Resin Ribbons (JS-TS350, JS-RTX421) — Best for harsh environments, synthetic labels, demanding applications. Superior scratch, smear, chemical and solvent resistance. High melting point (80-84°C). FDA, REACH, RoHS compliant options. Perfect for pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Ink Configuration: CSO vs CSI

All THERMACODE ribbons are CSO (Coated Side Out). The ink coating faces outward on the ribbon roll — standard for 95%+ of TTO applications. Compatible with Videojet, Markem-Imaje, Domino. To verify: stick tape to ribbon and peel — if ink transfers, that's the coated side.

Storage & Handling Best Practices

Store between 5-35°C (41-95°F). Maintain 30-80% relative humidity. Keep away from direct sunlight and UV exposure. Use within 18 months for optimal performance.
